Feature Request: Performance Reports

This is a series of graphical reports to be presented in Publishers' Assistant. Their purpose is to give you a good indication of how your business is doing at a glance.

Specification

These reports feature a graph that should illustrate the general performance of the business. Each report will be presented (as an option) in its own window on the left side of the main Publishers' Assistant screen. Each window will be expandable to allow you to better view the content of the graph. Each report window also features three command button options:

  1. Refresh -- This option will re-execute the query for the report and regenerate the graph. This option makes it easy to refresh the graph after significant new data has been entered into Publishers' Assistant.

  2. Restore -- This option restores the graph to its original size and position on the screen. Since the graph can be stretched to take a closer look, the restore option is provided to snap the graph back into place.

  3. Report -- This option calls the Report Viewer with the background report that feeds the graph. This lets you easily look at the details behind the graph.

One of the things I’m working on is a new set of graphical reports. I have long thought that I (personally) could use a reminder about why I am in business for myself and how my business is doing at a glance. So, one of the graphs I have produced shows my profit and loss by month. This gives me an ongoing picture of how the business is doing financially.

Here’s a sample:

I have been toying with doing a balance sheet report as well. This is a significant challenge, because PubAssist clearly doesn’t track all of the accounts that might feed into a balance sheet. For example, PubAssist has no idea what you have in the bank, or what you have for equipment. Nonetheless, it might be interesting and useful to present a picture of assets vs. liabilities from your PubAssist data.

Having said this, I thought I would ask all of you. What reports do you use to manage your business? What would you like to see as a snapshot of how you are doing? I thought it might also be interesting to share this information with each other.
