Purpose
This screen allows you to specify valid items (or Titles) as standing order items. These items can later be specified in a customer order like any other non-inventory item.
Standing Order Items allow you to quickly fill orders which will be repeated over and over for certain kinds of customers or certain kinds of items that are NOT subscriptions. This item ID is NOT used for specific books (that comes later); this item ID (which must begin with "SO") describes a category of repeat book orders.
Example 1: Review Copies
Certain reviewers will always be sent a finished copy of your new titles. Therefore, you might want to create a standing order for "SO-REVIEW" — Publishers' Assistant will let you indicate later which book will go out for review. You may use "GENRE" to refine your selection. If you publish both cookbooks and children's books, you would want to distinguish between the standing orders for each category of your reviewers.
Example 2: Serial Publications
If you issue an "annual directory" and you know that certain customers will want you to ship the next one and bill them for it, or if you publish a series of books on knitting and you have a customer who wants each one sight-unseen, then you could use the standing order function for these customers. You might use an item ID such as "SO-Directory" or "SO-Knitting Books" to make it easy to remember.
Processing Standing Orders
When you process standing orders (under the Sales menu) you will be asked for a potential list of item ID's via the Order Items browse screen. That is when you tell Publishers' Assistant which books to actually ship. This list of titles can be different every time you process standing orders.
